DSF has been reported to significantly inhibit the growth and clonogenic survival of cell lines in prostate cancer by unmethylating the promoter of the APC (adenomatosis polyposis coli) gene, which encodes a tumor suppressor protein that acts as an antagonist of the Wnt signaling pathway, and the RARB (retinoic acid receptor beta) gene, which limits the growth of many cell types.
