We chose lapatinib, a dual inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor and HER2 available in an oral preparation, because it had shown activity in patients with HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer treated with chemotherapy.6 The primary objective of this ST03 lapatinib substudy was to assess the feasibility and safety of combining lapatinib with epirubicin, cisplatin, and capecitabine (ECX) chemotherapy in patients with resectable esophagogastric adenocarcinoma. Here, ERBB2 is linked to gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma.
