(34) showed that while asymptomatic individuals produced higher levels of IFN-γ from their PBMCs compared to individuals with recurrent genital ulcers, addition of IFN-γ to HSV-2 infected cells from recurrent individuals led to heightened virus replication, rather than a reduction (34).
