Ox-LDL stimulates macrophages to release pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) to trigger pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant events in the initiation, propagation, and activation of atherosclerosis (Steinberg, 1997; Kirii et al., 2003; Robbesyn et al., 2004). This evidence concerns the gene TNF and atherosclerosis.
