Interestingly, immunofluorescence mapping of the tumor microenvironment revealed a significantly increased infiltration of tumor associated macrophages (TAM) (> 3-fold; P = 0.001; Fig. 5e and f), and there was a strong trend towards an increased tumor density of αSMA-positive, pericyte like vascular cells in the LD+ group (> 3-fold; P = 0.06; Fig. 5g and h).
