HMOX1 and neoplasm: In spite of its implication in tumor initiation, angiogenesis, and metastasis, excessively increased expression of HO-1 in tumor cells may lead to cell death through a process called ferroptosis [29,30,31,32] In fact, a lot of evidence showed that HO-1 induces ferroptosis through an increase of ROS production mediated by iron accumulation [33,34,35] and accompanied by augmentation lipid peroxidation and glutathione depletion.
