GPT and cancer: These rearrangements might be produced by alternative mechanisms of telomere maintenance or elongation and are reminiscent of telomere profiles observed in type II postsenescent yeast cells (Lundblad & Blackburn, 1993), ALT cancer cells (Cesare & Reddel, 2010; Shay et al, 2012), or ALT A. thaliana cell lines (Zellinger et al, 2007; Akimcheva et al, 2008), in which telomerase-independent recombination mechanisms can lead to very long and heterogeneous telomeres, thus sustaining long-term cell divisions.
