There are several patient-related (and thus nonmodifiable) factors associated with increased incidence of postoperative complications after bariatric surgery: male sex, preoperative BMI ≥ 60 kg/m2, open surgery, smoking within the last year, deep vein thrombosis, therapeutic anticoagulation, and serum albumin < 3.5 g/dL [91].
