In addition, acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase 1/2 (ACAT1/2) and 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase 1/2 (OXCT 1/2), enzymes associated with ketone re-utilization, were increased at the mRNA level in breast cancer cells in the presence of adipocytes (Fig. 4e), indicating that breast cancer cells allow ketone body re-utilization to maintain tumour growth.
