CD59 and Autoimmunity: The CD59 glycoprotein aids in preventing activation of the immune system and autoimmunity (Motoyama et al., 1992; Alegretti et al., 2012) and when this protein is either deficient or increased in glycosylation it can no longer block this autoimmune response (Qin et al., 2004; Nevo et al., 2013), which may warrant future consideration in relation to hyperglycemia and tissue degradation during progressive diabetic states.
