Blood-based biomarkers with clinical utility for ALS appear to include phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNFH), neurofilament light chain (NFL), microRNAs (e.g., miRNA-1234-3p), inflammatory markers (e.g., IL-6, IL-8, IL-5 and IL-2), TDP-43, and metabolites (e.g., glutamate and lysine) [6]. Here, NEFL is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
