Our recent studies have identified miR‐126, already known to play an inhibitory role on the PI3K/AKT pathway (Xiao et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2013), as a tumor‐suppressor in melanoma (Felli et al., 2013), demonstrating the existence of an auto‐regulatory loop that, connecting the tumor suppressor miR‐126 with the onco‐miR‐221/222, functions in melanoma development and progression (Felli et al., 2016). The gene discussed is AKT1; the disease is neoplasm.
