Inherited mutations in the SBDS gene have been identified in 90% of individuals with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by poor growth, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, skeletal abnormalities and bone marrow failure with an increased risk of progression to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) (Boocock et al., 2003; Warren, 2018). The gene discussed is SBDS; the disease is Shwachman-Diamond syndrome.
