SGMS1 and melanoma: To the best of our knowledge, sphingomyelin synthases SMS1 and SMS2 (encoded by the SGMS1 and SGMS2 genes), which metabolize ceramide into sphingomyelin (SM) (Huitema et al., 2004; Yamaoka et al., 2004), the most abundant SL in mammalian cells (Lafont et al., 2010), have not been analyzed in melanoma.
