Animal experiments showed that the expression of dopamine and 5‐HT continued to fall in a mouse migraine model.46 Repeated use of amitriptyline, which has been a widely used tricyclic antidepressant for half a century, would not increase the level of 5‐HT.46 Nevertheless, the levels of 5‐HT and dopamine increased remarkably when amitriptyline was used to cure pain episodes.46 Further research is required to identify possible mechanisms by which neurotransmitters interact with both diseases. The gene discussed is HTR5A; the disease is migraine disorder.
