Concerning neurodegenerative diseases, curcumin (100 mg/kg twice a day for 50 days intragastrically) contrasted extrapyramidal symptoms and increased HO-1 expression, through Akt/Nrf2 phosphorylation, in the substantia nigra pars compacta of rats treated with rotenone, a pharmacological tool able to destroy dopaminergic neurons and, therefore, used to induce experimental Parkinson’s disease (PD) [69].
