In a recent study, MUC1 has been shown to serve as an adhesion receptor for another gastrointestinal pathogen, enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) and knockdown of MUC1 expression in colonic cancer cell line was also associated with reduced EAEC binding (Boll et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene MUC1 and malignant colon neoplasm.
