PNPLA3 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: The first clinical evidence of association of a variant of the PNPLA3 (aliases Adiponutrin, calcium-independent phospholipase A2 epsilon) gene, rs738409 C > G with NAFLD development was provided by Romeo et.al who demonstrated that the frequency of the PNPLA3-I148M variant was significantly higher in the Hispanics (49%) compared to the European Americans (23%) and African Americans (17%).
