Intriguingly, large, multicenter, clinical trials such as the EMPA-REG-OUTCOME, the CANVAS Program, and the CV-REAL Nordic have demonstrated that SGLT2 inhibitors (empagliflozin, canagliflozin, and dapagliflozin) reduce cardiovascular disease and mortality compared to other anti-hyperglycemic agents in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (Zinman et al., 2015; Birkeland et al., 2017; Neal et al., 2017). Here, SLC5A2 is linked to diabetes mellitus.
