Decreased GFAP expression and reduced numbers of GFAP+ and S100β+ astrocytes are found in the prefrontal cortex (Nagy et al., 2015), anterior cingulate cortex (Gittins & Harrison, 2011), and the hippocampus (Cobb et al., 2016) of MDD patients, brain regions that are specifically involved in mood disorders (Torres‐Platas, Nagy, Wakid, Turecki, & Mechawar, 2016). Here, GFAP is linked to mood disorder.
