Amyloid‐beta peptides are detrimental to neuronal networks (Gouras et al. 2005) and play a central role in the molecular mechanisms of early disease progression (Selkoe 2004; Gandy 2005). BACE1 is the rate limiting enzyme involved in the production of amyloid beta peptides through cleavage of the membrane bound amyloid precursor protein (APP). BACE1 is therefore considered a biomarker for early detection, prediction, and progression of AD (Hardy and Higgins 1992; Hampel and Shen 2009).
