However, it is very likely that we observed the polarization of a mixed population of monocytes and microglia given the increased levels of MCP1 (involved in monocytes chemoattraction), ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 (involved in monocytes adhesion and rolling) and MMP3 (involved in blood-brain barrier disruption) observed within the ischemic hemispheres of CKD animals compared to SHAM animals (Supplementary Fig. 4).
