DPP4 and diabetes mellitus: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a life-threatening metabolic disorder characterized by high levels of glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or insulin resistance or both.1,2 Alogliptin (ALO) with IUPAC name as 2-({6-[(3R)-3-aminopiperidin-1-yl]-3-methyl-2,4-dioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl}methyl) benzonitrile (Figure 1) is a selective orally administered antidiabetic drug that belongs to dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor class.3 ALO improves the glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
