These results are congruent with several studies that have shown the anti-inflammatory effects of Tempol (e.g. Tempol blocked the release of cytokines from cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells challenged with macrophage chemotactic protein-1 or interleukin-6 [21]; reduced the pleural exudation and the polymorphonuclear cell migration in a rat carrageenan-induced model of pleurisy [22] and reduced the inflammation in a rodent model of periodontitis [23]. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and periodontitis.
