Indeed, we found that the combination of alteronol and ADM synergistically elevated ROS levels, triggered mitochondrial dysfunction, released cytochrome c into the cytoplasm, and elevated the levels of apoptosis-related proteins, e.g., the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, cleaved PARP, and cleaved caspase-3/9, thus eventually inducing breast cancer 4T1 cell apoptosis.
