LGR5 and neoplasm: LGR5 is a seven-transmembrane receptor that is widely recognised as a marker of intestinal stem cells.19,20 LGR5, when bound to R-spondin, can potentiate the Wnt/ β-catenin pathway by suppressing the negative feedback mechanism.21,22 However, the role of LGR5 in cancerous tissue is yet to be clarified.23 Based on the aforementioned function in a normal cell, LGR5 is presumed to promote tumour progression because the deregulation of Wnt/β-signalling is a fundamental inducer of colorectal cancer development.
