For the first time, we have investigated microglial relationships with the synaptic neuropil at ultrastructural resolution in post-mortem hippocampal tissue derived from individuals who suffered from AD, which allowed us to validate qualitatively our findings with respect to microglial association with extracellular debris and fAβ plaques, encirclement of dystrophic neurites and dendritic spines, as well as phagocytic inclusions. The gene discussed is FANCB; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
