The hippocampus and amygdala are both densely populated with glucocorticoid receptors (GR), and in adolescents with major depression, increased amygdala-hippocampal volume ratios were associated with increased anxiety-related indicators of allostatic load (Macmillan et al., 2003), perhaps due to stimulation of dendritic arborization and new spine formation on pyramidal cells (Morimoto et al., 1996). Here, NR3C1 is linked to major depressive disorder.
