The degradation of peptide cross-linked oxidised dextran hydrogel films was successfully monitored using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and impedance measurements at interdigitated electrodes in the presence of periodontal disease biomarkers human neutrophil elastase (HNE), cathepsin G and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) [8,9,12], and a non-specific biomarker for inflammation in multiple sclerosis MMP-9 [8]. This evidence concerns the gene MMP8 and multiple sclerosis.
