Recently, new classes of glucose-lowering therapies, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists,127 and inhibitors of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2 inhibitors)128 have shown exciting results with improved glycaemic control, as well as reduced cardiovascular mortality in patients with T2D.129 However, these recent trials were designed to assess the safety and tolerability of these novel drugs, and therefore the mechanisms behind the observed cardiovascular benefits are speculative. Here, SLC5A2 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
