The unavoidable delay in the identification of AKI has stimulated the development of several novel biomarkers, such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin [4], kidney injury molecule-1 [5], tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 [3], and cystatin C (CysC) [6–8]. This evidence concerns the gene CST3 and acute kidney injury.
