Due to the storage of PTH in the secretory active cells, fast induction of hypocalcemia (5% reduction of Ca2+ within 30 minutes) leads to the clinically observed PTH overshoot followed by a sharp decline, while slow induction of hypocalcemia (5% reduction of Ca2+ within 120 minutes) leads to a small PTH overshoot before reaching levels similar to those of the fast reduction protocol (Fig. 8).
