Asymptomatically infected persons have been defined in various studies as those who show no clinical signs or symptoms of VL but are positive in at least one marker of infection such as the Leishmanin Skin Test (LST), a marker of cell-mediated immunity [24–26]; an antibody detection test as the DAT, rK39 ELISA, or IFAT [5, 6, 12, 27], or a molecular marker as qualitative or quantitative PCR to detect Leishmania spp. The gene discussed is SLC6A3; the disease is infection.
