Based on strong data from local and international studies supporting the association between the HLA‐B*1502 allele and CBZ‐induced SJS/TEN, the Ministry of Health, in a joint Dear Healthcare Professional Letter with HSA issued in April 2013, stated that genotyping of HLA‐B*1502 prior to the initiation of CBZ therapy in new patients of Asian ancestry is standard of care.28 This has mitigated the risk of CBZ‐induced SJS/TEN locally,29 illustrating the role a regulatory authority can take in advancing the use of pharmacogenetics for drug safety. This evidence concerns the gene HLA-B and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
