Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an X-linked recessive condition caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, is associated with progressive skeletal and cardiac muscle weakness.8,9 Chronic glucocorticoid therapy has been demonstrated to prolong ambulation, preserve cardiac and pulmonary function, and significantly reduce the rate of scoliosis.10, -12 Boys with DMD have a significant increased risk for bone fragility and fractures. This evidence concerns the gene DMD and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
