The reason for this selection could be summarized as follows: (1) there is growing evidence linking cognitive function with proinflammatory markers, in particular the downstream CRP and the upstream cytokines IL-6 (Marioni et al., 2010; Tegeler et al., 2016), CRP and IL-6 were both found to be predictive of future cognitive impairment in previous studies (Weaver et al., 2002; Kuo et al., 2005).
