Vaspine is an adipocytokine that plays a regulatory role in glucose and lipid metabolism.15 Serum vaspin expression decreases with uncontrolled DM and weight loss, whereas serum concentrations increase with obesity.17,18 Vaspin levels can be normalized by insulin and pioglitazone therapy.16 As serum vaspin concentrations correlate with obesity and tests for body fat distribution, vaspin may be considered a new cytokine that may contribute to atherosclerosis and obesity.18 The gene discussed is INS; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
