IL6 and infection: As a pleiotropic cytokine, interleukin 6 (IL-6) is involved in a broad spectrum of biological events including, but not limited to (i) inflammation, which is a response to infections and damage in which the host defense eliminates the offending agents; (ii) glucose metabolism, which is the production and utilisation of glucose and (iii) haematopoiesis, which is the formation of blood cells [1].
