The major barriers posing a stumbling block to developing an effective vaccine and treatment methods are: (i) HIV’s inherent ability to mutate frequently, specifically its external envelope glycoproteins, resulting in the escape of immune variants; (ii) persistence of HIV in resting cells, which leads to incomplete suppression; and (iii) HIV infection in humans induces immune suppression, resulting from the massive and continuous depletion of CD4+ T-cells. Here, CD4 is linked to HIV infectious disease.
