MUC5AC and dysentery: It has been demonstrated earlier that the members belonging to the order Lactobacillales perform many important functions in the gut, such as production of Bacteriocins to supress the growth of pathogenic bacteria, synthesis of lactic acid and H2O2, fortification of epithelial barrier by induction of mucin secretion and enhancement of tight-junction functioning (Lebeer et al., 2008) and help in the prevention of infectious diarrhea, antibiotic associated diarrhea and diarrhea in children (Van Neil et al., 2002).
