Future studies would benefit from including iron status and inflammatory biomarkers (i.e., serum ferritin, serum transferrin receptor, C-reactive protein, α-1-acid glycoprotein) that can distinguish anemia caused by iron-deficiency or inflammation, as recommended by the BRINDA (Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia) project (83). This evidence concerns the gene CRP and anemia (phenotype).
