While TRAIL initiates apoptosis in cancer cells via binding to both DR4 and DR5 expressed on the cellular membrane, in dermal MFBs we observed that, although fibroblast activation induces both DR4 and DR5 at the mRNA and protein levels, DR5 is predominantly expressed on the cellular membrane and increased MFB susceptibility to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. The gene discussed is TNFRSF10B; the disease is cancer.
