Dr. Hunt’s group reported that NADPH-oxidase- (gp91) and glutathione peroxidase-1 knockout mice are not protected from eCM, exhibit similar parasitemia as WT controls, and that brain markers of oxidative tissue damage (protein carbonyls, 3,4-dihydrophenylalanine, o-tyrosine, and dityrosine) are similar in eCM (PbA) mice, non-eCM mice (Pb K173; PbK), and uninfected controls [31–33].
