This early increase in blood hepcidin during ischemic stroke is in agreement with the early increase reported in the hypoxic mice model (Ravasi et al., 2018) and with the two other reports on stroke patients (Petrova et al., 2015; Slomka et al., 2015) and might be a reflection of an increased expression and secretion of hepcidin from the ischemic brain cells to the extracellular medium, and a subsequent spillover out of the brain during stroke. Here, HAMP is linked to ischemic stroke.
