ADIPOQ and coronary atherosclerosis: An in vitro study has shown that the lowered mitochondrial respiratory capacity results in decreased secretion of adiponectin, an anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic adipokine, from adipocytes14, which raises the possibility that lowered EAT mitochondrial respiratory capacity may result in reduced secretion of adiponectin from the EAT, and the lack of adiponectin in the EAT may contribute to the development of coronary atherosclerosis.
