Brito et al. (2013), in their case report of a 32-week old female with kernicterus, suggested that unconjugated bilirubin increases the vascular density of brain regions associated with kernicterus, such as the hippocampus and corpus striatum, while triggering VEGF and VEGFR-2 immunoreactivity, along with albumin extravasation into the brain parenchyma [48]. The gene discussed is KDR; the disease is kernicterus.
