SLC7A11 and cancer: There is evidence that cancer stem-like cells expressing high levels of a CD44 variant containing exons 8–10 (CD44v8-10) are resistant to oxidative stress due to the robust glutathione synthesis mediated by stabilization of xCT (a cysteine/glutamate antiporter) at the cellular membrane, resulting in accumulation of some pathogenic proteins in cancer stem-like cells and leading to carcinogenesis [42–44].
