In response to stress, hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic CRH is released and binds to CRHR1 in the LC, causing a more tonic phase in these cells and consequential NE release, increased vigilance, hyperarousal and anxiety (Valentino and Foote, 1987, 1988; Van Bockstaele et al., 1996; Page and Abercrombie, 1999; Valentino and Van Bockstaele, 2008).
