Our current findings support strongly the need to further examine the exact impact of a downregulation of Npas4 expression within PV+ neurons not only at the cellular level using direct measures of PV+ neurons functions (e.g. measures of firing rate), but also at the circuit level to gain novel knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying prefrontal abnormalities in schizophrenia. The gene discussed is NPAS4; the disease is schizophrenia.
