Adipose tissue may increase BC risk via a dual mechanism: (i) aromatization of adrenal androgens to estrogens in the adipocyte increases estrogen circulating levels and consequently promoting proliferation of mammary epithelial cells; (ii) deregulation of adipokine’s expression and secretion, thus reducing the APN anti-proliferative effect on breast cells [31]. This evidence concerns the gene ANPEP and breast cancer.
